At Lungshan Temple in the center of Taiwan City, art is being used in a local revitalization project that is currently underway. A symposium will be held to discuss urban revitalization and art with the leader of the project and director of Bamboo Culture International, Margaret Shiu, as panelist. Based in Taiwan, Ms. Shiu has managed many projects using the power of art to unearth the latent attraction inherent in a given location. The symposium will be held in Koganecho, Yokohama, an area where citizens and administration are cooperating in a local revitalization project. Ms. Shiu will report on her various projects, including her most recent promoting the old city of Taipei. Following her report, the residents of Koganecho will join in a discussion about engaging in dialogue with an area, the role of culture in local revitalization, etc. While examining the development and future of urban revitalization in the two Asian cities of Taipei and Yokohama, we hope to create a network for future dialogue between the two cities.

Panelists

■Margaret SHIU, Director, Bamboo Culture International

With a background in economic development at University of California, Berkeley, SHIU worked as an economist before changing career to a visual artist, participating in national and international exhibitions. Since 1995, as the director of the alternative space Bamboo Curtain Studio, she has organized diverse educational and community program for discovering and nurturing creative talents. There is also the culture policy research unit, Bamboo Culture International, where she advocates artist in residencies, international cultural exchange and urban regeneration. She continues in networking internationally with many organizations for research and collaborations.

Born in 1950 in Fukuoka Prefecture. Began in the 1970s to work as an artist in Fukuoka. Also, organized study groups and exhibitions as supervisor of the IAF Art Laboratory. In 1990, assumed position of Office Director for the Museum City Project. Proposed exhibition throughout the city, "Museum City Tenjin." Thereafter, continued coordinating many activities including projects and workshops on the theme "city and art." In 2005, worked as curator for the "Yokohama Trienniale 2005." In 2008, worked as director of "Koganecho Bazaar." Currently, Office Director at the NPO Koganecho Area Management Center.

■Shigekazu ICHINOSE (Executive Committee Director of Ookagawa Cherry Blossom Festival Executive Committee)

Born 1943 in Yokohama City. During studies at Waseda University Law School, gained interest in theater with particular interest in scenography. Thereafter, with friends founded and was active in a new theater troupe. Because of operational challenges suffered by the troupe, around 1970, made the unavoidable decision to take over his family's business, which he operates to this day. Surmises a complimentary match between the creativity of urban revitalization and traditional family businesses.
